How do you negotiate the best possible severance package?

Once it is clear that a severance package is possible, the difficult part begins. Now it’s all about strategy, experience and a good sense of timing. Because not every demand leads to the desired result – sometimes it can even have the opposite effect. If you negotiate too early or too hard, you risk the employer blocking or withdrawing the offer.

A smart approach starts with analysis: How strong is your legal position? What evidence is available? How risky would a lawsuit be? The clearer you are in assessing these points, the stronger your position will be – and the more likely your counterpart will be to budge.

Severance payments are a matter of negotiation. But there is room for manoeuvre in almost every negotiation. It is often worthwhile to seek sound legal advice in order to find the right balance between pressure and diplomacy. The goal is not conflict – but an agreement that you can be truly satisfied with.

What can you do?

You can find out which steps really matter now on the page „Understanding severance pay”.
