The news often hits like a blow: „We have to part ways.”

Whether delivered in a friendly manner or coldly, dismissal throws life off track for a moment. Your head is spinning, your heart is racing – and your thoughts jump between anger, fear and the question: „Is there anything I can do about it?"

Yes, in most cases there is. But not always in the way many people initially think. Of course, you can contest a dismissal – but if you are honest with yourself, you know that returning to this job is rarely a good idea. You want to part ways, and you’ll probably do everything you can to make that happen.

Based on my experience (with very rare exceptions), I strongly advise against indulging in this illusion. Instead, it’s worth looking at Plan B: a fair severance payment – and the chance to start completely afresh – perhaps even better than before.
